Raising a Child with Sensory Sensitivities Can Leave You Feeling Isolated and Frustrated.

CAN YOU RELATE?

  • The meltdowns are incessant and unpredictable. You are exhausted and emotionally drained from walking on eggshells to avoid the next one.
  • You’re tired of feeling misunderstood by family, friends and even medical professionals who don’t believe what you’re going through.
  • You’re tired of people judging your parenting based on your child’s sensory behaviors.
  • You want to help instead of feeling helpless as you watch your child struggle daily with simple tasks.

…but you don’t know how or where to start.

You’re in the right place!

IS THIS YOUR CHILD?

You Might have a Sensory Sensitive Child if they:

Use this checklist to determine if your child might have sensory sensitivites.

Complain about the way clothes, underwear, socks or shoes feel on their skin.

Avoid or dislike participating in messy play or getting their skin touched by: paint, glue, slime, grass, sand, etc.

Have intense reactions or fear/avoidance of hygieine activities, like taking a bath, cutting hair, brushing teeth or cutting nails.

Are a selective or picky eater and only eats certain brands, colors, or textures of foods.

Can’t tolerate loud, unexpected or competing sounds such as those in a busy environment like a party or restaurant.

Have long, intense, frequent meltdowns that are difficult to calm; they also may prefer to be in control of things and rely on sameness and routine.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • It feels like you’re failing at parenting, you’re worried you’re failing your child, and you know you’re missing out on the enjoyable moments of this phase of your child’s life.
  • You’ve tried getting your child Occupational Therapy services, but they’re either too expensive, you’ve been told to “wait and see”, or they didn’t check enough boxes to be considered eligible for services.
  • Or you’ve gone the Occupational Therapy route, but you feel a little disconnected from the process. You’re not sure how to handle situations that come up at home. You need more support to get through the day.

“I have felt so understood and been given the exact knowledge and advice I needed to support my little ND family. It’s changed our family and life forever. Thank you.

BECOME A SENSORY W.I.S.E. PARENT

Join Sensory W.I.S.E. Solutions

Sensory W.I.S.E. Solutions is a 10 week course for parents and a group coaching program that guides parents in supporting their sensory sensitive children at home. S.W.S. uses a step-wise-”just right challenge” method to create more experiences of regulation in the presence of your child’s unique sensory triggers.

Listen to Carrie & Will’s story:

Life is so much different now than it was before the course began. I don’t know if Will would have qualified for services but his meltdowns and his perception of himself was making both me and my husband worried.

Watching the videos together and working on each step made such a big difference in our marriage and with Will.

As a result, WIll is doing so much better working on his sensitivities and he can see a difference too.  Yesterday, he said he knows how to calm himself better. Our families, Will’s preschool and friends have noticed a change.

Inside… you’ll learn my Sensory W.I.S.E. Solutions 4 step framework

MELTDOWNS

See what previous W.I.S.E. parents have to say…

Here’s a peek into the modules

Module 1 “W”: Understand why

In this module, you’ll gain insight into how your child’s brain works: Why they can’t seem to tolerate little sounds or feelings and why they could go from 0 to meltdown city in the blink of an eye and why other typical parenting meltdown tactics may not work.

Homework: The Sensory Cup Talk: this powerful lesson is a game changer and gives you and your child the language to help talk about their dysregulation.

Module 2 “I”: Identify profile and functional goals

In this module, we’ll identify and document the specific functional activities your child’s sensitivities impact. You will collect baseline information and set your own goals based on your identification of your child’s strengths and needs. Then, we can identify the gap between where they are now and where you’d like them to be.

You’ll identify the areas of focus for your child from these five areas:

  1. Sensitivity to clothes
  2. Sensitivity to texture/messy play
  3. Sensitivity to food
  4. Sensitivity to hygieine (hair brushing, baths, hair washing, nail clipping, brushing teeth, hair cutting)
  5. Sensitivity to loud sounds or busy, crowded environments

Homework: Clarify your child’s specific goals and prioritize them in order of importance, then start building your just right challenge ladder (which you’ll need for module E).

Module 3 “S”: Solidify sensory strategies:

Become a sensory detective! In this module, you’ll become an expert in your child’s regulation strategies and explore different (simple, easily accessible) strategies and activities to help your child become more regulated in their days.

I’ll help you curate the perfect set of sensory strategies based on different regulating inputs that you get to explore and document with your child. By the end of this module, you’ll have a ready to go sensory toolbox that work for your child and that you can confidently and seamlessly use daily. Then, they’ll be ready to tackle the just right challenge.

Homework: Build your sensory toolbox and implement a successful, consistent sensory diet plan that works for your whole family.

Module 4 “E”: Engage in the “just right” challenge:

The bulk of the work is done here, where you will start playing and practicing the activity you identified as a goal.

Homework: Practice through play. The goal of the “just-right challenge” is to encourage progress without hitting dysregulation.

“But Laura… it’s not just the cost. I don’t think I have enough time in my day to add another thing to my plate”

I get it… I totally do.

And heck…. I probably have more time than other parents and I STILL feel like I don’t want to add another thing to my plate.

Because it’s not just time that we need, it’s the mental capacity and energy to put forth the effort it takes to learn new information and carry out a program.

BUT…

How much time and energy are you putting forth right now sitting through meltdowns?

How much time and energy are you spending each day dealing with clothing or food battles?

How much time and energy are you spending each week managing bath time and other night-time routine struggles?

How much time and energy are you spending each week googling and scouring the internet for pieces of information to help you understand your child?

⏰So which would you rather spend time on:

16 weeks of connecting with parents, joining coaching calls to learn directly from an OT, learning strategies and tools to support your child (that will eventually pay off and take less of your time)

OR

Battling, negotiating, bribing, googling, yelling and being frustrated daily (that will continue with no end in sight)?

HEY! I’M LAURA

I’m a pediatric Occupational Therapist, a wife and mother to a preschooler with Anxiety and Sensory Processing Disorder.

In addition to direct sensory integration clinic work with children ages 3-12 for the past 5 years, I now also focus on directly giving parents the education, information and tools to be able to support their children at home.

Can I admit something? I’ve always had a hard time meeting other moms with common interests.

Early in her infancy, Liliana’s temperament and sleep (or lack thereof) kept me away from mommy groups.

By the time she was 18 months, I was honestly desperate for friends. I started stepping out of my comfort zone and meeting other moms. They were so, so sweet, and I was thrilled to have a social life!

But before I knew it, the feelings of isolation returned. When we’d meet up for play dates, I’d watch in envy as all the other moms got to sit in a circle, sipping their still hot lattes casually and confidently glancing at their tots who were happily, independently playing in the playground.

Meanwhile, Liliana clung to me like a magnet. She was anxious and fearful of new environments, didn’t want to get messy in the playground, and was a hair-trigger away from a melt-down.

Some days I’d have to cancel play dates because she’d have a meltdown before we left the house, and it ruined all plans of leaving.

On the days that we were able to get out, I’d spend most of the play date managing her emotions and sensory behaviors. Even worse were the days we’d have to leave early because of a major meltdown. I left many play dates in tears, feeling more isolated than ever.

I knew sensory sensitivities were common- I’m an OT! But experiencing it as a mom, and seeing all my friends have what I called, “unicorn babies” was frustrating.

I had a lot of feelings of resentment. I couldn’t believe how hard it was to find support for parents like me, even with my experience in the field.

My vision is to create a community that provides a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for other parents of sensory-sensitive kids who are feeling lost and isolated.

I’m the Mom who “gets it”.

I get the mental load. I get the exhaustion. I get the desperation.

I get the gut wrenching feeling of invalidation when you’re not taken seriously by medical professionals who gate-keep the services you know your child needs and deserves.

I’ve been turned away, brushed off and gaslit by pediatricians, developmental specialists, and LMFTs who made me jump through hoops just to get my daughter seen.

One day it hit me… if someone like me, an educated, in-the-field, well connected pediatric OT is struggling this much to get my own daughter the appropriate support services, what are other parents doing?

So I created Sensory W.I.S.E. Solutions.

I’ve used my background in Occupational Therapy and my experiences with my daughter to develop a process for giving your child the lifelong skills they need to advocate, adjust and adapt to any stressful environment or activity.

Because…let’s face it. The sensory sensitivity isn’t going away. (We all have our own sensory preferences, even as adults!)

But we CAN keep our sanity, repair our relationship with our child, celebrate small wins (putting on the socks, eating the food, touching the paint, etc.), and bring peace back to our daily lives through this approach.

Previous S.W.S. Parent Testimony

This program made a huge impact on our family in a very positive way! My son is a mixed seeker/sensitive and because of this program, we were able to create a toolbox of ways to be proactive in keeping him regulated.

We are still a work in progress but this program gave me the tools and confidence to talk to my son about his sensory profile and for us to find ways to help him through his meltdown and ways to keep him more regulated which has decreased the number of meltdowns we were having. He also overcame a few of his sensitivities which is a huge win!

Tara, Summer 2022 S.W.S. cohort

As a family, we have worked together to help her with her sensitivities to cream and sunscreen-she can now get sunscreen on with minor whining (was gagging and screaming hysterically still at the end of last summer!). We created just right challenges around swim lessons using a dollar store baby, and the challenges have had direct benefits at the second and third lessons.

Even though we were already participating in OT, this program is exactly what our family needed to help us all get on the same page.We are more on the same page during the time between meltdowns. Most importantly, he has been able to practice implementing just right challenges.

I would recommend this program to anyone who is in the same situation our family was in. I also think it would be extremely beneficial to anyone just getting started and trying to learn more about how to help their child. I wish I had discovered this program and Laura’s IG account a year and a half ago when we were all struggling to understand what was going on and knew nothing about sensory processing!

Nicole, Winter 2022 S.W.S. cohort

I do believe knowledge is power! After feeling so helpless for so long, learning about how to better support my family with their sensory processing needs has empowered me as a single mam of three!

An enlightening moment for me was realizing I too suffer with sensory processing disorder. Learning about our sensory cup as a family has been invaluable. It’s something we openly speak about freely on a daily basis now.

I love that the videos are short and to the point. With illustrations using every day scenarios to make them so relatable.Really helps me concentrate on the necessary points.

I’m so thankful I found Laura on Instagram. I help my children better manage their big feelings and sometimes they even remind me to breathe and empty my sensory cup.

Heavy work, was a new idea to me altogether, I’d never heard of it. I see how better self regulated my 5 year old is when we ingrate it into our daily routine.

Laura has been so supportive and so kind in taking time from her day and family to always answer any questions I may have. Things I can’t really mention to family or friends because they don’t understand, they don’t live it! Thank you for helping me feel less alone Laura, forever grateful x

Danielle

Finding Laura has been our saving grace! My daughter has always been very sensitive to clothing, tastes and textures of foods and loud noises.

Her emotional responses to these issues were really starting to affect our daily lives. We could never quite get to the source of her distress and it was getting progressively worse.

Even with all the resources we had we still didn’t feel like we were getting the root of the problem. I was lucky enough to hear Laura as a guest on a podcast and decided to explore her work further. I felt like I finally found someone that could help me understand my daughter and how to help her thrive!

I joined the W.I.S.E. Parents program at the beginning of its launch and it has greatly improved our entire family’s quality of life.

Our ability to communicate with our child and understand her needs has greatly improved. The W.I.S.E. website is brimming with information and ideas for parents to help their children work through their sensory struggles.

The program is laid out in a way that is extremely informative, organized and easy to understand. Her communication and attention through her W.I.S.E. Facebook page make you feel like you’re getting a one-on-one experience and is also an amazing resource to connect with other parents of sensory sensitive children.

Within a few months I have seen some dramatic changes in my daughter’s ability to handle her sensory issues. We are so grateful to have found Laura and the WISE Parents program!

Megan

We are so grateful to Laura! She’s been incredibly helpful to our family. Our 3-year-old son has SPD, anxiety, and OCD. Sensory WISE has given us such a great resource to turn to for answers. It explains what our son goes through in a way that is easy for us to understand and gives us essential guidance. The program is easy to follow while giving tons of information.

The best part is that Laura has the knowledge of an OT mixed with the empathy of a sensory parent. It is the very best of both worlds. We couldn’t be happier with our purchase!

CareyAnn & David

One of the greatest things I learned as well is acceptance of meltdowns & my child ND traits. Thank you there’s so much more I can’t put into words and this is a lifelong work in progress but the foundation you have given me is something I wish I had years ago.

You gave my family and I confidence and easy to implement strategies that aren’t overwhelming. You make understand, learn, & apply digestible for a busy mama of a child with autism/SPD, a toddler whom I now suspect has a complete opposite SPD profile as my first son with autism, & a newborn.

Kim

The One-Step-Wiser, Can’t Go-Wrong, Hassle-Free-Guarantee

(Whew, that was a mouthful…but I meant every word of it!) I promise that if you make this commitment to yourself and your child, you will be able to celebrate wins both big and small (but we all know that really, there is no win that’s too small!). You will be more confident in the way you support your child through every meltdown (No, I can’t guarantee meltdowns will end, but I can guarantee you’ll have the tools to best support your child through them).

When you commit to being proactive and learning the ins and outs of raising a sensory sensitive child from this program, you’ll unlock a whole other universe of potential, because your child will no longer be battling against you, they will work with you and be motivated to explore the world in the new ways you allow them to.

You WILL “feel empowered instead of helpless” as one W.I.S.E. parent put it.

I’m so confident in this program that, if you find yourself unsatisfied with the program, you can ask for a refund within the first 30 days.  You must prove that you have done the work, watched lessons, and participated in discussions to be granted a full refund.

YOU CAN STAY IN SURVIVAL MODE…

Or you can THRIVE and become a W.I.S.E. parent

HAVE A QUESTION?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have an understanding of Occupational Therapy to complete this program?

No! This program was created for parents specifically. Your child may or may not already receive OT services, but the OT isn’t able to spend much additional time teaching you the why or how behind their strategies. With this program, you’ll be able to continue this support at home using the method I developed to support my own daughter, using my knowledge of OT principles.

I’ve spent so much money on OT services. Is it worth it to invest in my own training?

Absolutely! Oftentimes parents cannot secure OT services for one reason or another, or they are receiving services, but it’s typically completed in a therapist-child dynamic,  and won’t be helping with the day-to-day at home. This program will help you navigate these challenges alongside your child, and will give you the knowledge, understanding and support to create a functional and supportive routine in the home.

Finally, you’ve found the place where you can be surrounded by like-minded parents who understand your day-to-day. You’ll learn strategies to help your child confidently navigate the world and participate in all kinds of activities. No more avoiding uncomfortable situations. You will build your relationship, bond and grow with your child. Through this program, both you and your child will feel empowered, resilient, and supported.

I’m a new OT/SLP/teacher and just really want to learn more from you, can I take this course?

While I’m extremely passionate about educating everyone about the impact of sensory processing on behavior and learning in our children, I am also very passionate and feel strongly about saving this program and it’s community for parents. The language I use in the program and the intention of holding a safe space for parents in the private community led me to the decision to limit enrollment to parents only. If you are interested in taking other introductory SPD courses, please check out Star Center Institution.

My child doesn’t have a diagnosis of any kind, will this program still help me?

Yes. This program focuses on sensory sensitive behavior that impacts functioning. With or without any specific diagnosis of any kind, if your child is having a consistent difficult time with particular activities of daily living, such as: messy play, hygieine, wearing clothes, eating, handling loud sounds or busy environments, you can take this program.

Will my child still need OT after this program?

This program does not replace therapy, and though you most likely will have success in getting your child to participate in daily activities, it does not address any underlying sensory processing inefficiencies.

Furthermore, with no direct contact between myself and your child, there’s no assessment and I cannot conclude whether or not your child does or doesn’t need OT. I’d still recommend a consult just to be safe.

How much time will it take to complete this with my child?

>CLICK HERE TO SEE THE FULL PROGRAM SYLLABUS<
The shortest video lesson is about 4 minutes, with the longest being 30+ (towards the end of the modules). Watching the videos, doing the homework and attending the coaching calls will guarantee your success in the program.

The program will be guided at a 10 week pace, to complete all the modules within 10 weeks + 6 weeks to put the last module into play with ongoing support. After the program, however, you can re-visit modules at your own pace.

You will want to carve out some time to work with your child on tackling the just-right challenge. Because this can be a wonderful time for you and your child to bond and build trust, it’s time well spent! You can continue going in circles trying to find this information online or try one-off activities you see on Pinterest, but with this program you’ll have the confidence that the time you’re spending is actually moving your child forward and helping you strengthen your relationship with your child.

An important thing to understand is that this process is a marathon, not a sprint. If your child is in therapy in addition to this program, you’ll most likely make progress faster than if you were only doing therapy or only doing this program.

My child seems to be a mix of everything! He seeks things and is sensitive to things, will this program address seeking behaviors?

If your child over responds or overreacts to touch or sound as it relates to messy play, eating, hygiene (hair brushing, washing, bathing, nail clipping), wearing clothes, or loud environments, then yes. It is common for children to also seek out other kinds of sensory input in addition to being sensitive to others and those children are welcome and would still benefit from this program. I do not address specific seeking behaviors in the pre-recorded lessons, but you can bring up some questions about seeking behaviors in the coaching calls.

What age is this program for?

The core content (videos and lessons) referencing sensory processing information, methods, and strategies to support your child are applicable to all ages. However, some suggested scripts and example activities are best suited for preschool to early elementary age (2-7) that you can easily adapt or tailor to fit the needs of your child. The benefit of this program is being able to ask me questions in the private community group or the group coaching calls where you can bring your questions and I can help tailor and work through anything that you need to be adjusted for your child’s age.

If my child is already getting OT, is this still helpful?

Yes, an in-person Occupational Therapist will be working from a bottom-up approach and directly helping your child with their sensory integration limitations. This program provides you, the parent, with specific tools and a step-by-step strategy that you can really take and tailor so that you can use it for any other challenge that comes up.

Most OTs don’t take the time to give parents such detailed information and background on the ins and outs of sensory processing

Most OTs won’t tell you HOW to find the just right challenge- they will give you the just right challenge for a specific activity, but I’ll teach you how to analyze activities and find the just right challenge for anything.

What’s the difference between OT and this program?

Though this program is taught by an Occupational Therapist, I am not providing direct 1:1 therapy or assessment to your child. Instead, you, the parent, are my client.

In Occupational Therapy, the goal is to improve your child’s sensory modulation (aka- the actual “hard-wiring” in their brain that tells them that the sound is louder than it is) so that they have improved tolerance to sounds, feelings, movements, foods, etc. They are tackling the problem at its root.

In this program, I can’t directly impact your child’s sensory processing abilities. My aim is to show you ways that you can support them where they’re currently at, so that they can be as independent and as successful as possible in their daily lives. My goal is to help you find adaptive strategies, and identify stepwise progressions to gradually safely expose your child to a particular input (e.g. sound) that’s impacting them. (E.g. moving from not tolerating the sound of a blender at all, to being able to tolerate it for 5 seconds).

I won’t promise you that within X months your child will be able to tolerate the sound of the blender with no problem.

Instead, maybe within 3 months your child will be able to count down to the blender, push the button to turn it on and turn it off after 5 seconds instead of running away at the sight of it.

Do you offer refunds?

I’m so confident in this program that, if you find yourself unsatisfied with the program, you can ask for a refund within the first 30 days.  You must prove that you have done the work, watched lessons, and participated in discussions to be granted a full refund.

If you haven’t utilized the program materials or watched the lessons, OR it’s past the first 30 days of the program, no refund will be made available.

What does an example just right challenge progression look like?

For example, when working on your child’s ability to explore a new fruit, like a blueberry, we might work in this progression:

tolerates blueberry on the plate→  pokes blueberry using a fork → pokes blueberry using a toothpick→  touches blueberry with fingers →  touches blueberry to face → smells blueberry → touches blueberry to lips → licks blueberry→  puts blueberry in mouth → nibbles small bite (may spit it out)–>  takes a small bite and swallows→  eats a blueberry

Or, if you want to practice finger painting with your preschooler:

Will use paint while wearing gloves and long-handled paintbrush → will use paint with long-handled paintbrush (no gloves)–>  will use paint using a shorter paintbrush or Q-tip → will use paint using sponge or cotton ball → will touch paint using finger → uses full palm with paint to make a hand print

I’ll give you specific examples of just right challenge ladders for each sensory activity, but even more importantly, I’ll teach you HOW to come up with the just right challenge, so you can apply it to literally anything that comes up.
